How to export scans from Navvis' VLX
Updated over a week ago

Navvis VLX scanner captures detailed and accurate spatial data in a short amount of time. When exporting the data from IVION to be used with Imerso, it is important to follow the steps below for the best experience.

These steps will ensure that 360º panoramas taken with the VLX scanners are brought over to Imerso, which in turn enhances the accuracy of the BIM Deviations analysis tools, providing more reliable results, even when these are merged scans.

Step 1: Download .e57 file with panoramas

Alternative A - Crop and Download

You can download the point cloud from IVION using the “Crop and Download” tool. Follow the steps in IVION's documentation to select which area to download, and make sure to select the option .e57 with panoramas as the point cloud type.

This alternative will always include panoramas into the E57 file.

Alternative B - Downloading a whole dataset

You can also download a specific point cloud dataset by going to Site Setup and then to Processed Data. Choose a point cloud as the output file and for the data format select E57.

For more details on this option, read IVION's documentation.

⚠️ This alternative requires that the option “include panoramas in .e57 point cloud” was enabled when the dataset was processed within the IVION software. Otherwise, the downloaded dataset will contain no panoramas.

If the dataset has no panoramas, then you can use the Crop and Download alternative above.

Step 2: Upload the File to Imerso

Once you’ve saved the file as an e57 file, it is ready to be uploaded to Imerso. Within the Imerso platform, go to the scans page and press the "Upload scan" button. Choose the “merged/slam” scan option (not the “stationary” one). This will ensure that your e57 file is uploaded with the panorama data enabled. For more details please read our article for scan file upload.

💡 Imerso only allows up to 750 million points per point cloud entity. If using the "Crop and Download" tool, you can hide datasets to make sure this limit is not exceeded. If a single dataset is bigger than this limit, it will have to be cropped on IVION in order to maintain the panoramas.

⚠️ Be aware that cropping or editing scans with tools other than Navvis' IVION, such as Cloud Compare or similar, will unfortunately result in the loss of panoramas.

By following these steps, you can make the most out of your Navvis VLX scans with the Imerso web platform. For more information about using Imerso and Navvis VLX scans, please contact Imerso.
