To ensure optimal performance of the analysis tools, Imerso enforces a maximum limit on point cloud size.
The limit is 750 million points per point cloud.
How this applies to your files
The limit applies to the specific structure of the data, not necessarily the total size of the uploaded file. This distinction is critical when using different file formats:
Single-Entity Formats (e.g., .LAS, .PLY):
These formats typically contain a single unstructured cloud. If the total point count of the file exceeds 750 million, the upload will fail.Container Formats (e.g., .E57):
Formats like E57 often act as containers for multiple individual scans. The 750 million point limit applies to each individual scan inside the file, not the sum of the whole file.Valid: An E57 file containing 4 separate scans of 200 million points each (Total: 800 million points).
Invalid: An E57 file containing a single merged scan of 751 million points.
What to do if you exceed the limit
This limit is most frequently exceeded when multiple scan positions are merged into a single, massive point cloud. For the best results in Imerso, we recommend keeping scan setups separate rather than combining them. You can learn more in our article about merged vs. individual scans.
To ensure your files stay within limits, refer to our guides on how to export unmerged setups from popular scanning software:
If your scan is a SLAM/drone scan or you dont have access to the original scans but to the merged one, you can try following this article to bring the limit under 750 million points:
